Eclipse over Oregon: As found from the NASA interactive eclipse map, the centerline of the Moon’s shadow first makes landfall at Lincoln Beach, Oregon off US 101 on the Pacific Coast at 10:15:58 AM Pacific Daylight Time (17:15:58 Universal Time).  At Lincoln Beach, totality lasts 1 minute, 58 seconds and the path of totality is 62 miles wide at the Pacific.

At Salem, the state capital, totality begins at 10:17:21 AM, and lasts for 1:54.  The lunar umbra passes over 337 miles of the state of Oregon in the span of 11 minutes, 9 seconds, at an average speed of 2251 miles per hour, or 2.96 times the speed of sound..

The Moon’s shadow along the centerline departs from the state at Lime, Oregon, and the trailing edge crosses the Snake River into Idaho at 10:27:07 AM PDT (17:27:07 UT).  At Lime, the duration of totality is 2 minutes, 10 seconds and the path of totality at the eastern border is 64 miles wide.

NOTE: Duration of totality is longest along the centerline.  Duration of totality approaches ZERO near the edges of the path of totality.  Please consult the NASA interactive eclipse map for precise times and durations of totality at each specific location in the state, along with locals times for the beginning and ending of the partial eclipse phases.

Lodging: As with all locations along the path, hotel reservations will fill up well in advance.  Plan instead to tent camp or rent an RV.  While there are many commercial and public campgrounds, primitive camping is inexpensive in the National Parks and free in the National Forests.

Visit the following in Oregon: Umatilla National Forest, Malheur National Forest, Ochoco National Forest, Willamette National Forest, Mt. Hood National Forest, Siuslaw National Forest, and Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.

Traffic Concerns: In the event of any last-minute, impromptu eclipse day trippers, I-5 and other north/south highways into the state might experience traffic jams.  With 39 million Californians and 10 million in Washington and British Columbia, even small percentages of unprepared eclipse goers could create a difficult situation on the roads and at destinations.

Weather: According to the Eclipsophile site, based on meteorological averages, eastern Oregon has the best weather prospects of the entire USA for clear skies on Eclipse Day!
